Thankful for K-YOU: A Love Story

by Matthew Smircich '02

November is a thankful month and so we are going to look at a pair of KU alumni. They have two reasons to be thankful: Kutztown University is where they got their education and is also where they fell in love.

When did you graduate and what was your major? Also, what do you do now?

Kelly majored in Elementary Education with a concentration in Early Childhood Education. She graduated in 2002 and currently teaches fourth grade in Prince William County School District in Virginia. I graduated in 2003 with a Criminal Justice major. I worked for the US Capitol Police as a Bomb Technician in Washington, DC.

Please tell us why you are thankful for the education at Kutztown and how it prepared you for your current jobs.

KU was a great school for education; many of Kelly's coworkers did not get to have the amount of practical experience as she did. Her first teaching job was at the school where she did her student teaching, Lincoln Elementary in Allentown. She spent two years there before moving to Virginia with Brian.

KU is also a great school for criminal justice. Most federal agencies require a bachelor's degree as a minimum requirement for employment, so having a degree definitely sets someone apart from other candidates. I would say the two courses that helped me out were Constitutional Law and Criminal Law. Understanding procedures in the criminal justice system helps prepare you for the academy.

How did KU bring you two together?

We both worked at Schuylkill Hall. Kelly was a DR and I was a CA. We met at the beginning of the spring semester and were dating by the end of February 2001. In 2003 Brian took a job with the US Capitol Police. He proposed that Christmas and we were married in July of 2005.

Do you both come back to visit the campus?

We have come back to the campus on several occasions and we try to make it to every homecoming to see our college friends. Currently, Kelly has a cousin who is a senior at KU and we have visited him with our two kids.

Finally, what advice do you have for current students?

Enjoy the college experience! Take advantage of everything it has to offer because there will never be another time in your life like this!
