Celebrating Love Forged on Campus:
the KU Sweetheart Dance

By Jane (Byrnes) Joyce ’65

My mother helped me put on the veil. I looked in the mirror. 1964, 21 years old, and getting married to my boyfriend – my sweetheart - at the small Catholic church on Main Street in Kutztown. I had moved out of Kutztown’s University’s Old Main on Friday, and he had moved out of Rothermel Hall.

Fifty-five years later – 2019: I am wearing a sequined skirt, and he is in a sport coat, and we are standing in front of the mirror. We are on our way to Kutztown University’s first Sweetheart Dinner Dance. Dining at tables for eight in a candlelit room in McFarland Student Union building, we laughed, chatted, reminisced the night away with grads we did not even know but had wonderful stories to tell. It is such a delight to come back to your Alma Mater.

The second Sweetheart Dinner Dance is coming up Saturday, February 15.

Kutztown University gave me my start in adulthood– my education and 55 years of marriage. Twenty years ago, we started tailgating at KU football games, and ten years ago, I began participating in the Ladies Tea. As proud graduates of KU, I/we support OUR university with contributions for students who need financial assistance. Best of all, I have renewed friendships and am now part of the Alumni Council that is open to any graduate. Why not participate, join the Alumni Council, join an affinity group? If you cannot physically participate at this time, send some dollars to the KU Foundation, which in turn helps today’s students.
